CROSS CHANGE CURATED #1 revisiting relations with resources
Hi there,
Welcome to the new era where you will witness how conscious design makes, triggers, and critiques positive change for a better society and planet.
This is Tuğçe Akbulut, founder of Cross Change. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Here, I am going to curate and share design solutions with my faith in design as a driving force and the ultimate tool that will help us to transform not only ourselves, but also our systems, and society into something better. This is the content that I create for my bi-weekly newsletter.

#1: revisiting relations with resources
Everybody is talking about a grand and radical change nowadays. It has become an important part of our daily conversations, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is possible to trigger this radical change we want to see by utilizing a disruptive shift in perspective, or by focusing on our “signature strengths” as suggested by Martin Seligman.
Today, I would like to share with you three examples that are in between those two paradigms, where existing resources and workflows are revisited by implementing a disruptive shift in perspective. Does the change we seek need to be in establishing colonies on Mars?
What if the first step of the radical system change we want to see is to redesign our relations with the existing resources?
The finance sector makes the most influential decisions that affect our world. We also witnessed the same fact during the COP26 by watching that finance is the biggest driving force of change even when there is an existential emergency.
Well, where does that money go? Are investors using impact investment for greenwashing? Are they aware their investments may help grow the evils faster?… What’s happening in the biggest money-making ecosystem?
Here is a crazy platform Globalance World, a personalized digital world map that allows you to discover the impact and returns of your wealth. Impact ecosystem, startup incubators, angel investment organizations, this is an urgent invitation for you to assess how sustainable, future-fit, and profitable all those investments are. You can even start now because it assesses in real-time!
We all know the textile industry can be a big devil in sense of rapid consumption and ecological pollution. As Byborre states on their website “80% of the environmental footprint of textile is set in stone during the design process.” So if design causes this mess then can’t it be also the solution?
Meet Byborre, a digital platform and a system design that makes it very easy to design and produce responsible textiles for different sizes of initiatives. They bring together textile innovators, producers, factories, yarn producers who are committed to sustainable textile creation with creators in a safe and user-friendly environment.
If the tomorrow of our planet is not urgent reason enough, What can encourage textile factories to make necessary changes in their production systems for planet-friendly textile creation?
Albert Einstein once stated, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Business as usual is no longer an option and we need the imagination to tackle the problem we caused. This is the place where design emerges as a tool for provocations for the better.
I would like to introduce you to Planet City by Liam Young (architect, director), a speculative narrative of what could happen if we were radically reverse this planetary sprawl.
The project shaped around this question; “What if we reached a global consensus to retreat from our vast network of cities and entangled supply chains into one hyper-dense metropolis housing the entire population of the earth?”
I perceive these projects as an invitation to look at the existing resources from a different perspective. Do you see any resources around you that will be more impactful with a regenerative approach and a holistic perspective?
